ISLAMABAD, Dec 05 (INP): Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday held a meeting with US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation process Zalmay Khalilzad in the federal capital.
During the meeting, the envoy extended best wishes on behalf of US President Donald Trump and discussed the prospects of Afghanistan peace process with the premier.
“The US leadership is looking for a political solution to the Afghanistan issue,” the diplomat said.
To which, the Prime Minister remarked “Pakistan has always preferred a political solution to the Afghan conflict.”
Further apprising the premier on the US policy, the Afghan-born representative said that the US wants to work with Pakistan side by side in order to restore peace in the war-torn country.
Laying stress on the mutual relations between the two ally countries, PM Imran said Pakistan requires the cooperation of the US in the areas of trade, investment, education and healthcare.
Khalilzad met Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi yesterday and reiterated President Trump’s desire to seek Pakistan’s support for peace and stability in Afghanistan.
“Pakistan will continue to cooperate with sincerity for political settlement in Afghanistan. Long-lasting peace in Afghanistan is in Pakistan’s best interest,” the foreign minister tweeted.
US Special Representative, Zalmay Khalilzad, had arrived in Islamabad on December 4. He will later travel to Afghanistan, Russia, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Belgium, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar during his 18-day tour until December 20 on account of supporting and facilitating an inclusive peace process in Afghanistan.
