China not bothered by India-US navy exercise

BEIJING, July 8 (INP) China says it is not much bothered by the naval drill, called the Malabar exercise, which will take place in the Indian Ocean between India, the United States, and Japan next week. "We have no objection to normal bilateral relations and cooperation among relevant countries," Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang said. This is significant because the Malabar exercise will include anti-submarine drills. China has been sending its submarines to the Indian Ocean area quite often in recent times. "We hope this kind of relation and cooperation is not directed at any third party," Geng said. The scope of this year's Malabar exercise is very wide with the US deploying its aircraft carrier USS Nimitz, India sending its carrier INS Vikramaditya and Japan dispatching helicopter carrier Izumo. The 8-day exercises, set to start on Monday, will involve more than 20 warships from the three countries. INP/AH/LK
