Urban infrastructure projects worth Rs20bn proposed to improve services in Karachi, Hyderabad

Development projects worth Rs20 billion aimed at improving urban infrastructure and civic services in Sindh were considered during a meeting of the Central Development Working Party (CDWP), according to the Monthly Development Update released by the Ministry of Planning, Development and Special Initiatives.

The report states that the projects fall under the physical planning and housing sector and are intended to provide basic civic services, including roads, sewerage systems, water supply infrastructure, parks and renovation of schools.

According to the report, the CDWP reviewed two projects under this sector with a combined estimated cost of Rs20 billion.

One of the projects, titled Hyderabad Urban Infrastructure Development Package (Modified), with a cost of Rs5,000 million, was approved during the meeting.

The second project, titled Karachi Urban Infrastructure Development Package (Modified), with a cost of Rs15,000 million, was recommended to the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) for final approval.

The Planning Ministry’s report notes that these projects aim to improve urban infrastructure and public services across different areas of Sindh.

According to the report, the initiatives focus on providing essential civic facilities to urban communities, including construction and rehabilitation of roads, installation of sewerage lines, development of water supply networks, improvement of public parks and renovation of educational institutions.

The report highlights that the projects were part of the broader development proposals reviewed during the CDWP meeting held in February 2026.

According to the Planning Ministry’s update, the meeting considered a total of 11 agenda items, including development projects, position papers, and concept clearance proposals submitted by federal ministries and provincial governments.

Out of these items, six were development projects, three were position papers, and two were concept clearance proposals.

The report states that four projects were approved during the meeting, while five projects were recommended to ECNEC for final approval. In addition, two concept clearance proposals were also cleared.

The review covered development proposals across several sectors, including governance, health, physical planning and housing, science and technology, transport and communications, and water resources.

According to the Monthly Development Update, the proposed urban infrastructure projects in Karachi and Hyderabad are part of broader development initiatives intended to improve urban services and public infrastructure in Sindh.
