A large-scale plantation campaign has been launched at the Mohmand Dam Hydropower Project, with a target of planting 54,000 trees and plants of various indigenous species across the project area to promote environmental sustainability and ecological restoration.

The plantation drive was launched on Friday to mark Pakistan’s Independence Day, according to a report carried by Gwadar Pro on Sunday.

As per details, the initiative is being carried out in collaboration with the Mohmand Forest Division. General Manager and Project Director Mohmand Dam, Fasihullah Paracha, led the campaign by planting a sapling at the project site.

He was joined by the Chief Engineer (Civil), Director Agronomy, Director Social Resettlement and Environment, representatives of contractors, and senior security officials.

Speaking on the occasion, project officials said the plantation drive aims to create a greener and cleaner environment, restore the area’s natural landscape, reduce pollution, and enhance biodiversity around the dam site.

They noted that tree plantation is an integral part of the project's environmental management strategy and reflects its commitment to sustainable development.

The Mohmand Dam Hydropower Project is being developed by the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA on the Swat River in Mohmand District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The project is being constructed by a joint venture comprising China Gezhouba Group Company (CGGC) and Descon Engineering Limited.

As per WAPDA, once completed, the multipurpose project will have an installed hydropower generation capacity of 800 megawatts, produce approximately 2.86 billion units of clean electricity annually, store around 1.29 million acre-feet of water, help mitigate floods in the Peshawar Valley, and irrigate nearly 18,233 acres of new agricultural land while supplementing irrigation supplies 160,000-acre feet existing land.
