Senate shaken as questions raised over govt advisors' roleBreaking

June 12, 2025

A wave of concern has swept through the Upper House as senators grow increasingly uneasy over the rising number of advisors and consultants in the Senate. Senator Danesh Kumar has taken the lead by writing a formal letter to Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gillani, demanding transparency and full disclosure of official foreign visits and the appointment of advisors. In his letter, Senator Danesh Kumar expressed serious reservations about the lack of transparency in the Senate’s international delegations.

He highlighted that the responsibilities traditionally assigned to elected senators are now being delegated to unelected advisors, creating widespread discontent. The senator further stated that there is a prevailing impression that advisors are being given key roles in foreign delegations, sidelining senators in the process.

According to him, some advisors allegedly secure spots in these delegations based on personal relationships rather than merit, qualifications, or relevant experience. Senator Danesh Kumar's letter calls for a complete record of all official foreign trips conducted by the Senate over the past year. He also demanded a detailed breakdown of the number of advisors appointed, their qualifications, privileges, and the criteria used for their selection.

The letter underscores growing internal unrest among lawmakers who feel increasingly disconnected from important functions and decision-making within the Senate, particularly in matters involving travel, diplomacy, and official representation. Danesh Kumar was elected to the Provincial Assembly of Balochistan on a reserved seat for minorities in the 2018 Pakistani general election, representing the Balochistan Awami Party. He is currently serving in the Senate of Pakistan.
