Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge accused BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, of misleading the Rajya Sabha over facts related to Vande Mataram and disrespecting Congress leaders and freedom fighters. Kharge said no lessons on nationalism, patriotism, or the national song are needed for Congress, pointing out that the party has sung Vande Mataram for decades and played a key role in the freedom struggle.
He criticised Modi for focusing on a political campaign while India faces economic challenges, joblessness, and social issues. Highlighting historical facts, Kharge noted that the Congress Working Committee, including Gandhi, Subhas Chandra Bose, and Malviya, had collectively decided to sing only the first two verses of the song. He demanded an apology for the alleged disrespect to national heroes, saying BJP’s claims were far from the truth and an attempt to divert attention from pressing national problems.
