From Child to Senior Citizen: Open Manholes Continue to Claim Lives
A heartbreaking incident in Zaman Town has once again exposed the serious dangers caused by poor infrastructure and official negligence. An elderly man lost his life after falling into an uncovered manhole, an accident that was captured on CCTV footage and widely shared on social media.
According to the footage, the man was walking with his bicycle when he suddenly fell into the open manhole and disappeared. Residents said the area had no proper street lighting, which caused delays in rescue efforts. Sadly, the senior citizen died at the scene. Police later confirmed that he was a resident of Zaman Town, Sector 34/3.
Residents strongly criticized the authorities, saying that the manhole had no cover, warning signs, or safety barriers. They blamed government departments for failing to maintain basic road safety, which continues to put lives at risk.
This tragedy has deeply shocked the public, especially because it happened only days after another painful incident. Earlier this month, a three-year-old child named Ibrahim fell into an uncovered manhole near Nipa Roundabout. That incident caused widespread grief and anger across the city. People expressed their sorrow and frustration on social media, demanding immediate action from the Sindh government.
Despite massive public outrage and online campaigns, no visible work has been done so far. Manholes remain uncovered in many areas, and citizens say the government has failed to take serious steps to close these deadly holes or improve street lighting.
The repeated loss of innocent lives shows that these are not accidents but the result of neglect. People believe that if action had been taken after the child’s death, the elderly man’s life might have been saved.
Citizens are once again urging the Sindh government and local authorities to take responsibility, repair roads, cover manholes, and ensure proper lighting before more families suffer irreversible loss.
