Arab League condemns Houthi missile attack on Marib's military camp

January 20, 2020

CAIRO, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Abul Gheit on Monday condemned a missile attack on a government military camp in the Yemeni northeastern province of Marib.

"The attack, possibly the bloodiest since the eruption of the Yemeni war, aimed at disturbing the relative calm that prevailed Yemen recently," Abul Gheit said in a statement.

It came in a very sensitive time and "will hider serious moves toward peaceful solution," he added.

The attack on Al-Estiqbal military camp in Marib on Saturday evening killed at least 111 soldiers, according to medical sources.

Abul Gheit described the attack as an attempt by foreign parties to foil the Yemeni arena and divert the attention far from its real domestic problems and challenges.

He reiterated the assault "will further escalate the conditions in Yemen to serve regional powers agenda that seek to use Houthi as a cat's claw."

Yemen has been mired in a civil war since late 2014 after the Houthi group stormed much of the country's north and forced the internationally-recognized government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi out of the capital Sanaa.

The United Nations has been trying to end the war that has killed tens of thousands of people and pushed the country to the brink of famine.
