January 09, 2020

CANBERRA, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- Prime Minister Scott Morrison said on Thursday that Australian troops will remain in Iraq because "the situation overnight has stabilized."

Morrison said his government remained focused on ensuring "a united and stable Iraq."

At a press conference, when asked if Australian troops should be withdrawn from Iraq, Morrison said, "That is not the decision we have taken."

U.S. President Donald Trump has said that no U.S. casualties have resulted from Iran's recent missiles attack against U.S. forces in Iraq.

Trump has also hinted at potential cooperation between Washington and Tehran, saying, "The destruction of ISIS (the Islamic State) is good for Iran, and we should work together on this and other shared priorities."
