China's lottery sales down 11.6 pct in November

BEIJING, Jan. 1 (Xinhua) -- China's lottery sales continued to fall in November compared with the same time last year, official data showed.

Lottery sales totaled 37.77 billion yuan (about 5.4 billion U.S. dollars) in November, down  4.95 billion yuan or 11.6 percent year on year, according to the Ministry of Finance.

In breakdown, sales of welfare lottery tickets went down 15.3 percent from last year to 16.7 billion yuan, while sports lottery sales sank 8.4 percent to 21 billion yuan.

In the first 11 months of this year, lottery sales fell 18.6 percent year on year to about 381.1 billion yuan. And southwest China's Sichuan Province was the only region that reported a year-on-year increase in lottery sales, which grew by 947 million yuan.

Under China's lottery management rules, money from lottery ticket sales is used for administrative expenses, public welfare projects and prize money.
