DHAKA, Dec 31 (INP) - Bangladesh ODI skipper Mashrafe Mortaza, who contested in eleventh parliamentary elections, has secured a landslide victory from his Narail 2 constituency.

The first-ever active cricketer to become a member of parliament has won with a mindboggling margin by securing 274,418 votes, whereas his political rivalJatiya Oikya Front candidate AZM Fariduzzaman could get only 8,006 votes.

The 35-year-old cricketer, with the victory, has become the second national cricket team captain, after Naimur Rahman Durjoy to become an MP, and the first active cricketer to enter into the parliament.

However, Mortaza has already retired from T20 international cricket and has not played a Test match since 2009.

In an interview to AFP earlier in December, he asserted that he might be the Bangladesh s biggest cricket star, but insisted that he was not another Imran Khan, Pakistan s cricketing superhero-turned-prime minister.

He had said that he wanted to do more for sports and charity by entering into the parliament.

"To be honest, the level where Imran Khan has reached, people cannot always reach there even if they want to," Mashrafe said.

Besides, the local media have been reporting that Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who led Bangladesh Awami League, has achieved a landslide victory on Monday following the election marred by deadly violence, which claimed lives of at least 12 people, and that the opposition slammed as "farcical" and rigged.

She will form the government in the country for the third consecutive term.

Her ruling Awami League party and its allies won 288 seats in the 300-seat parliament, with the main opposition securing only six seats.
