CAIRO, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- Egypt is following up with great concern the ongoing developments in Iraq and the Gulf region, as well as the escalation in the use of military force, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.
"In this regard, Egypt appeals to all parties to refrain from spiralling into a cycle of mutual violence," said the statement.
It also warned that such an escalation might undermine the region's security and stability and add to the sufferings and casualties of its peoples.
The Egyptian remarks came hours after Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) claimed responsibility for a series of missile attacks on two Iraqi military bases housing U.S. troops.
Last week, a U.S. drone attack near Baghdad airport killed IRGC commander Qassem Soleimani, Iraqi militia leader Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis and six others.
