Experts at upcoming conference to suggest strategy for generating clean energy

November 25, 2022

More than 250 leading experts from across the world will attend a conference in Pakistan to suggest an appropriate strategy to the government to ensure maximum utilisation of water resources in the country for clean and green energy generation, WealthPK reports. The daylong second international hydropower conference will be organised in December jointly by Energy Update and the relevant government departments. “Stakeholders and experts, both local and international, will attend the conference,” President of the National Forum for Environment and Health (NFEH) M Naeem Qureshi told media.

He said the theme of the conference is “Sustainable dams and drains in mitigating climate change”. He added that the theme of the conference was chosen in the context of the recent devastating floods in Pakistan. He said the conference would also be attended by representatives of the power sector regulator, government authorities, private sector, local banks, international donor agencies, energy companies and prospective foreign investors keen to invest in hydroelectricity to help Pakistan decrease its reliance on fossil fuels for power generation.

Naeem Qureshi, who is also the chairman of the organising committee of the conference, hoped that the recommendations of the conference would suggest a clear way forward for expanding hydroelectricity resources in the country for greater clean electricity production. He said that maximum utilisation of the hydro resources was key to furthering the government energy sector policy, which stood for electricity generation based on renewable and indigenous power sources while minimising the use of fossil fuels for energy production.

Qureshi said that the development regime under the aegis of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) also provided an excellent opportunity to attract local and foreign investment in the hydroelectricity sector. Former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi recently performed soft launching of the second international hydropower conference and praised the efforts of Energy Update to regularly organise conferences on different aspects of the power sector.
