Pakistan can significantly boost tourism revenues and local economy by promoting Kalam as an adventure and eco-tourism hotspot, opined Mukhtar Ali, Manager Tourism Facilitation Centres of Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation (PTDC), while talking exclusively to WealthPK.
“Increased footfall of foreign visitors will fetch precious foreign exchange to the state coffers. With the development of tourism in Kalam Valley, the local economy will improve through various businesses, including hotels, restaurants, handicrafts, and souvenir shops. Services sector, including tourism guidance, trekking leads, storytellers, and tourist guidance, will also bring new opportunities, particularly for the local communities,” he said.
He said the promotion of eco-tourism will raise awareness about care for the natural surroundings and conservation. “When people realize they can earn by guarding the natural environment, they will value these assets more. Conservation isn’t just necessary; it will help secure a green future for the coming generations.”
Mukhtar said, “Locally, increased tourism revenue can be used to establish modern health and education services, improved infrastructure, healthcare, and the best hospitality. A well-coordinated international promotion strategy can turn Kalam into a top-tier destination for adventure and eco-tourism enthusiasts.”
He emphasized the need for strategic promotion of Kalam through digital marketing, representation in international travel expos, and partnerships with different global platforms. Virtual tours should be arranged as people enjoy them, particularly those living in other countries. These efforts can not only strengthen the local sustainable income but also improve the national economy, he added.
Talking with WealthPK, CEO of Concordia Expedition Sahib Noor said, “On the international front, exposure of Kalam as a tourist destination is equal to nothing. Usually, foreign tourists know about Hunza or Skardu, but Kalam is rarely on their traveling chart. Kalam is one of Pakistan’s most under-promoted but breathtaking tourist destinations.
“Tourism here can transform both local and national economy. A coordinated push involving the federal tourism bodies, private sector collaboration, and international outreach campaigns can help Kalam emerge as a globally recognized tourist destination.”
He said Ushu Glacier could be turned into a hub of ice-based activities in winter. The glacial lakes of Kundol and Mahudand are worth visiting. Riverside villages, hiking trails, and a cloudy and rainy forest are also heaven for adventure lovers. A shingled road leads to Ushu and Utror valley.
Sahib Noor said, “Limited access infrastructure and lack of coordinated branding are keeping the area from international exposure. Only a little focus on the Kalam Valley can add another mesmerizing page to the tourism book of Pakistan.”
