Nigerian security forces rescue aid workers from Boko Haram militants

January 16, 2020

LAGOS, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- Nigerian security forces on Wednesday rescued five aid workers from the captivity of Boko Haram militants in the restive northeast part of the country.

The aid workers working for international organizations were abducted by Boko Haram militants in December 2019 along Monguno-Maiduguri road in Borno State, according to the police.

Peter Afunaya, spokesman for the country's secret police, told Xinhua Wednesday that the rescue operation was carried out in collaboration with other critical stakeholders in military and intelligence services.

Afunaya said the aid workers are in good health.

The northeast region in Nigeria has been destabilized for over a decade by Boko Haram, which kidnapped hundreds of schoolgirls in 2014.
