Senate’s FA committee gives strong rebuttal to Alice’s remarks

November 27, 2019

ISLAMABAD, Nov.27 (INP): The Senate’s foreign affairs committee termed the recent remarks of US Deputy Secretary of State Alice Wells on China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) as “uncalled for, unwarranted and unprecedented”.

The remarks amounted to promote fiction and present a biased perspective on CPEC,

The Committee unanimously passed a resolution rejecting ‘unacceptable US interference’ on CPEC, reports China Economic Net.

The Senate body, under the chairmanship of Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed, with all the members in attendance, rejected the US statement on CPEC as “unacceptable interference in Pakistan’s sovereign right to exercise policy choices that best protect and promote its national interests.”

The Committee received an hour long in-camera briefing by the Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi regarding CPEC and other issues.

The Senate Foreign Affairs Committee strongly urged the government of Pakistan to make it clear in “unequivocal terms that Pakistan will not tolerate any dictation from any country that seeks to undermine the time-tested Pakistan-China relations.”

Meanwhile, the ruling Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) turned down the remarks of a senior US diplomat for South Asia that China Pakistan Economic Corridor project would push Pakistan deeper into a debt trap.

Last week, Wells speaking at a gathering in Washington had said that multi-billion-dollar project will take a toll on Pakistan’s economy at the time of repayments.

The project guarantees profits for Chinese state-owned enterprises, with little benefits for Islamabad, she had added.

The PTI secretary information asked Wells that where was her warning about the human, social, financial and psychological impact of the Afghan war against the Soviet Union in the 80s and its fallout on Pakistan?

He questioned the timing of the statement saying that Wells never warned Pakistan for any disasters before, then why was she warning on CPEC, a project which is providing Pakistan infrastructure, connectivity and development including the largest network of roads, a pivotal and strategic seaport and energy opportunities?

He said that CPEC is changing Pakistan by creating great opportunities for self-sustainability and development.
