Special units formed in 13 hospitals to deal with heatstroke in Karachi

KARACHI, Oct 10 (INP): Sindh health department on Tuesday has completed all arrangements to deal with heatstroke in Karachi as special units have been formed in 13 different hospitals to control the situation. Medical experts have advised elderly people and children to avoid travelling in hot weather. They also asked the ailing people to take special precautions as their chances to get affected by the heatstroke are more. The doctors have also said that a person being hit by heatstroke should take bath with cold water and also prevent himself from sun exposure. Last year, Karachi experienced the worst heat wave for nearly 35 years and killed more than 1,000 people. The morgues ran out of space and residents rushed to supply over-stretched public hospitals. The heat wave in the city of 20 million people coincided with severe electricity cuts, leaving many without fans, water or light and the beginning of the holy month of Ramazan, when many Muslims do not eat or drink during daylight hours. Temperatures shot up to 44 degrees Celsius (111 Fahrenheit), the hottest since 1981, although they dipped to 38 degrees Celsius (100F) in some days. INP/AK
