ISLAMABAD/PESHAWAR, Oct 29 (INP): Earthquake tremors jolted several parts of the country late Saturday. Tremors were felt in Islamabad and adjoining areas, parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA). According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the earthquake was recorded at 5.9 on the Richter Scale. The earthquake struck at a depth of 38km and its epicentre was Hindu Kush region in Afghanistan, PMD said. The tremors were felt in Dir Bala, Lower Dir, South Waziristan. Reports of jolts in Bajaur Agency, Abbottabad, Mansehra were also received. The quake originated 25km northwest of `Alaqahdari-ye Kiran wa Munjan, Afghanistan, having a depth of 101.3 km. —USGSOther cities affected by the earthquake include Balakot, Malakand Agency, Chitral, Lahore, Kasur, Parachinar, and Shangla. No loss of life or property was reported. Pakistan is located in the Indus-Tsangpo Suture Zone, which is roughly 200 km north of the Himalaya Front and is defined by an exposed ophiolite chain along its southern margin. This region has the highest rates of seismicity and largest earthquakes in the Himalaya region, caused mainly by movement on thrust faults. Along the western margin of the Tibetan Plateau, in the vicinity of south-eastern Afghanistan and western Pakistan, the South Asian plate translates obliquely relative to the Eurasia plate, resulting in a complex fold-and-thrust belt known as the Sulaiman Range. Faulting in this region includes strike-slip, reverse-slip and oblique-slip motion and often results in shallow, destructive earthquakes. INP/AJ
