TRIPOLI, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) -- The UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) on Thursday welcomed calls for de-escalation and end of hostilities in Libya.
"UNSMIL welcomes all calls for de-escalation, end of hostilities and lasting peace," UNSMIL said in a statement, noting the National Initiative for Peace announced by a group of activists in eastern Libya on Wednesday.
The UN mission also urged support and encouragement for such calls and initiatives to facilitate a political solution in Libya. "These initiatives demonstrate the commitment of the Libyan people to stop the bloodshed, promote human rights, establish rule of law, and build an inclusive and united state for all Libyans," the statement said.
The east-based Libyan army, led by Khalifa Haftar, has been leading a military campaign in and around the capital Tripoli, trying to take over the city from the rival UN-backed government. The violence has killed and injured thousands of people, and displaced more than 120,000 civilians from their homes.
