Spain did not simply beat France—they suffocated them.

A World Cup semi-final that promised fireworks turned into a masterclass of control, pressing and possession by the European champions, sealing a commanding 2-0 win to book their place in their first World Cup final since lifting the trophy in 2010.

Spain were on top in every aspect of the game from the first whistle, giving France's star-studded attack the time and space that had made them one of the most feared sides in the tournament.

The hosts took the lead from the penalty spot via Mikel Oyarzabal after Lamine Yamal was fouled inside the area midway through the first half. Getting back into the game was tough for France, chasing shadows as Spain kept the ball and the tempo.

Pedro Porro sealed the win just before the hour, calmly finishing after a neat exchange with Dani Olmo to cap another flowing Spanish move.

Despite having the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele and Michael Olise, France produced very little, registering just two shots on goal as Spain’s disciplined defense frustrated Didier Deschamps’ side throughout the match. “We did everything perfect against a team that has been having a brilliant World Cup,” Porro said after the match, calling the victory “a dream come true.”

France coach Didier Deschamps admitted his side were second best, while Mbappe acknowledged Spain had executed their game plan to the letter and deserved to be in the final.

Spain will now play the winner of the second semi-final between England and Argentina, with Sunday's final providing the opportunity to complete a remarkable World Cup-European Championship double and herald what many believe could be the country's next golden generation.
