In another tragic incident highlighting the growing mental health crisis among Indian paramilitary forces, a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) constable from the 231st Battalion was found hanging inside his quarters in Geedam area of Dantewada district, south Chhattisgarh. The deceased, a native of Bhawanipur in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur district, was discovered dead around 5 a.m.
A forensic team examined the scene, and the body was sent for post-mortem. Police said no foul play was suspected, though an inquiry has been initiated. The case adds to a worrying trend of suicides among Indian security personnel deployed in Maoist-affected areas. Earlier this month, another CRPF constable, Pappu Yadav, was found dead in Bijapur, while a Chhattisgarh Armed Forces officer, Dinesh Chandela, allegedly shot himself in August.
Analysts say the repeated incidents reflect extreme stress, isolation, and lack of psychological support for troops stationed in prolonged conflict zones. Security experts have urged the Modi government to establish confidential counselling and proper rotation systems to prevent further loss of lives among the forces.
