Journalists booked for exposing doctor’s refusal to treat Muslim woman in UP Breaking

October 08, 2025

Authorities in India’s Uttar Pradesh have booked two journalists for circulating a video exposing a shocking incident in which a doctor at Jaunpur district hospital allegedly refused to treat a Muslim woman during labour on religious grounds.  According to Kashmir Media Service, a video posted online showed the victim, Shama Parveen, saying the doctor told her, “I will not treat a Muslim woman. Take her elsewhere.”

The incident triggered outrage, with opposition leaders condemning the act as a reflection of growing communal intolerance under the BJP regime. Instead of acting against the accused doctor, police registered an FIR against local journalists Mayank Srivastava and Mohammad Usman for “unauthorised entry” and “damage to property.”  Samajwadi Party MLA Ragini Sonkar slammed the move as “shameful,” saying the government was punishing those exposing truth rather than ensuring justice for the victim.

Congress leader Vikesh Upadhyay also condemned the incident, urging strict action against the doctor.  Meanwhile, BJP spokesperson Avnish Tyagi dismissed the accusations as “politically motivated,” claiming the Yogi Adityanath-led government does not discriminate in providing public services.
