1st test trail of SRT metro gets underway in LahoreBreaking

In a mega development, 1st test run of Chinese “First Super Autonomous Rapid Transit (SRT) Metro has come into effect in Lahore.

Maryam Nawaz inaugurated test run of Pakistan’s first urban electric train overseeing its performance from Ali Town to Muslim Town in Lahore.

During the inspection, she reviewed onboard facilities and monitored the train’s performance in mixed traffic conditions. Punjab Transport Minister Bilal Akbar briefed her on key project details.

Talking to Gwadar Pro Chinese Consulate Lahore Consul General Zhao Shiren, commented that Chinese SRT launch is not just about technology – it’s about creating a smarter, greener, and more connected city.

With its ability to navigate narrow urban roads and congested areas, he mentioned that the SRT is set to greatly enhance mobility in Lahore. The city's residents will benefit from reduced travel time, cleaner air, and a more sustainable urban environment, he added.

Marked with eco-friendly feature, it travels 25 km on just a 10-minute charge, using low-carbon energy storage systems. With a total length of 32 meters, the train can carry over 300 passengers, offering flexibility and comfort.

In an interview with Taha Khan Azizi spokesperson of OLMT and NORINCO said that SRT Metro, known as trackless, ticketless and battery-powered electric tram” arrived in Pakistan imported by Chinese company “NORINCO International” on July 21, 2025.

Its arrival in Pakistan marks the beginning of local engagement and feasibility exploration for potential deployment. And it aligns with Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s newly approved five-year transport master plan, which aims to deploy an Automated Rapid Transport (ART) system in 30 cities across the province.
