November 12, 2025

The Karakoram International University (KIU) and the China-Pakistan Joint Research Centre (CPJRC) on Earth Sciences have reaffirmed their partnership to advance joint research in climate change, natural hazards, and sustainable development. A delegation from CPJRC, led by Executive Director Prof. Hang Tianhua of Quaid-i-Azam University, visited KIU on Monday and held discussions with Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Attaullah Shah on expanding collaboration under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

Both sides reviewed ongoing projects and discussed new initiatives, including the development of the Karakoram Observation and Research Station in Gilgit-Baltistan, which will study glaciers, natural hazards, and environmental sustainability, according to Gwadar Pro. Prof. Shah said KIU aims to become a regional hub for climate and environmental research, producing knowledge that supports CPEC and uplifts mountain communities.

Prof. Hang praised KIU’s growing role in scientific research and called for continued cooperation, faculty exchanges, and joint training programs. Launched in 2023 at Quaid-i-Azam University, the CPJRC—an initiative of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Pakistan’s Higher Education Commission—focuses on multidisciplinary research across the Himalayan, Hindu Kush, and Karakoram ranges to promote sustainable development and climate resilience.
