Pakistani scholars, from senior experts to young researchers, actively contributed to global ocean dialogues at the 2025 China Marine Economy Expo (CMEE) held here, demonstrating the growing role of Pakistan-China collaboration in marine sciences and sustainable ocean governance.
The Expo served as a vast platform spanning 40,000 square meters, featuring over 300 leading enterprises, according to a Gwadar Pro's report.
Covering marine energy, deep-sea mining, intelligent ocean equipment, marine electronic information, modern marine services, marine biopharmaceuticals and coastal tourism, it facilitated high-level exchanges on maritime innovation and cooperation.
Professor Samina Kidwai, Director General of Pakistan’s National Institute of Oceanography, delivered a virtual presentation titled “Climate Variability in the Arabian Sea and Its Impact” on the occasion.
Her analysis brought critical regional climate challenges to the forefront of international discussion and highlighted the need for joint research initiatives.
The inaugural Blue Wave Conference, launched on October 30 as a key component of the expo, saw vibrant participation from Pakistani youth.
Aidah Baloch, a PhD candidate at the Ocean University of China, presented her work on bridging weather forecasting and long-term climate prediction.
She also joined a dynamic “Flash Mob of the Ocean Decade Youth Action” that showcased practical marine conservation projects led by young people worldwide.
“This platform transforms research into tangible international partnerships. Aligning Pakistan’s coastal challenges with global climate adaptation efforts is crucial for our shared future,” Aidah remarked.
The conference, held in response to the UN Ocean Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, gathered hundreds of young scientists and entrepreneurs from about 20 countries.
A significant outcome was the release of the “2025 Blue Wave Shenzhen Initiative”, which outlines ten clear action areas to boost youth participation in ocean affairs.
The initiative includes establishing a Global Ocean Youth Partnership Network, forming a Global Ocean Youth Committee and creating a Youth Blue Action Index to foster an open and collaborative global system for ocean sustainability.
