October 09, 2025

Lanzhou University (LZU), China, and the Sindh Agriculture University (SAU), Tandojam have signed a landmark five-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening academic collaboration, scientific innovation, and joint research in agricultural sciences and climate resilience. The agreement, signed by SAU Vice Chancellor Engineer Professor Dr Altaf Ali Siyal and LZU President Professor Dr Yang Yongping on Tuesday afternoon, marks a new chapter in Pakistan-China higher education cooperation, aligning with the broader goals of CPEC and the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), Gwadar Pro reported.

Under this MoU, both universities will collaborate in plant breeding, genetics, stress physiology, biotechnology, and sustainable agricultural practices. The partnership also envisions faculty and student exchange programs, joint research workshops, and opportunities for SAU’s MSc and PhD students to pursue advanced studies at Lanzhou University.

Speaking on the occasion, Professor Siyal said, “This agreement will help our students and researchers gain access to global best practices and cutting-edge Chinese agricultural science, helping us combat climate challenges and enhance food productivity.” He emphasized that the MoU would “serve as a bridge between two nations that have long shared a vision of prosperity through knowledge, technology, and innovation.”

A Joint Coordination Committee comprising representatives from both universities will be established to ensure effective implementation and periodic review of the partnership. Lanzhou University, one of China’s leading institutions in environmental and agricultural research, has expressed strong interest in knowledge transfer and research collaboration with Pakistani counterparts to jointly tackle issues like drought, soil degradation, and water scarcity.

Both sides agreed that such academic linkages reinforce the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor’s human capital and innovation dimension, helping Pakistan move toward a sustainable, knowledge-driven agricultural future.
