The fruits of law enforcement began to appear on the Lahore's roads as number of traffic accidents has dropped by massive 47 percent 12 days after the enforcement of Punjab Motor Vehicle Amendment Ordinance. In this regard, Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Lahore Dr Athar Waheed said that for the past 12 days, the Lahore Traffic Police has adopted a zero-tolerance policy regarding the implementation of the rules. He said a major reason for the significant reduction in accidents is also the improvement in traffic discipline.
The Traffic Police is also conducting an awareness campaign through megaphones at signals across the city, CTO Lahore said. Dr Athar Waheed said that the implementation of the rules is possible only if indiscriminate action is taken. He said action was also taken against about 750 government department vehicles in the past 12 days. Earlier, new traffic fines have come into effect after amendments to Motor Vehicle Ordinance.
According to the new law, the minimum fine for a motorcycle will be Rs2,000 while the minimum fine for a rickshaw will be Rs3,000 for violating traffic rules. The minimum fine for a car and a jeep for violating traffic rules will be Rs5,000 while the minimum fine for public transport, tractor trolley and commercial vehicles will be Rs10000 to Rs20000.
