Cattle market ban lifted in Attock amid public demandBreaking

June 30, 2025

Deputy Commissioner Attock Rao Atif Raza has lifted the 15-day ban on cattle markets in the district that was earlier imposed to curb the spread of the Congo virus. The ban, which came into effect on June 16 under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code, was initially enforced following the confirmation of a Congo virus case in Tehsil Hazro and aimed to prevent large gatherings of people and animals.

The Deputy Commissioner, in a written order issued , announced that cattle markets across Attock district will resume operations, including the Gondal Mandi the largest cattle market in Punjab which will now be held as scheduled on Monday. The decision comes after considerable public pressure and financial concerns raised by government stakeholders, including the Punjab Cattle Market Management and Development Company (PCMMDC) in Rawalpindi Division.

Officials cited significant economic losses due to the suspension of market activities, with auction contracts slated for implementation from July 1, 2025, facing potential disruption.Rao Atif Raza acknowledged the health risks posed by such large-scale gatherings including exposure to the Congo virus, respiratory infections, and other diseases but emphasized that the ban is being lifted conditionally, subject to strict health precautions recommended by the District Health Department and Livestock Authorities.

Director Livestock Attock has confirmed that his department has launched a district-wide public awareness campaign to mitigate the risks. The campaign urges animal handlers and the public to:   Avoid self-medication and report suspected cases to livestock and health authorities, Properly treat wounds of animals, Refrain from wearing loose or open footwear in animal areas,   Disinfect animal sheds using kerosene oil and lime powder, Safely burn decaying plant waste during shed cleaning.

The Deputy Commissioner assured that all cattle markets in the district must adhere to these health guidelines to operate safely. Authorities will monitor compliance closely to prevent any resurgence of the Congo virus or related infections. Gondal Livestock Market, a major economic hub for the region, is set to resume its regular Monday operations, offering a vital platform for livestock trade ahead of Eid ul Adha preparations.
