Cyclone alert sounded as low pressure develops southeast of KarachiBreaking

May 22, 2025

A low pressure has developed over the east-central Arabian Sea; 1075 south-west of Karachi and could turn into a depression within the next 36 hours after moving north. The Met Office has said that its cyclone warning center in Karachi is monitoring the movement of the low pressure. The Met Office has further said that right now, there is no threat to Pakistan’s coastal areas from the weather system.

The cause of development of the low pressure over the Arabian Sea is warmer than usual water.  And weather experts say it could cause a heatwave in Sindh, including Karachi, from May 24 to June 1. If the system turns into a cyclone, it will be named Shakti — a name proposed by Sri Lanka, meaning ‘power’. In coastal areas like Karachi, the combination of high temperature and humidity, known as the Heat Index or feel temperature, exacerbates the discomfort.
