Coordinator to the Prime Minister Rana Ihsan Afzal Khan on Wednesday informed that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has issued directives to the committee under the Ministry of food Security to conduct an urgent and comprehensive review of the sugar sector and enforce stringent monitoring mechanisms without delay. In an exclusive conversation with a local news channel coordinator to PM stated that the government is actively monitoring the sugar sector amid a climate-induced shortfall, with swift corrective measures expected in the coming days.

 Rana Ihsan Afzal Khan confirmed that the sugar supply situation is under strict review by a high-level committee formed under the Ministry of Food Security. He emphasized that while this year's crop yielded better returns for farmers compared to previous seasons, unexpected climate impacts have led to temporary disruptions. “The Prime Minister had already imposed a ban on sugar exports in January to protect domestic needs,” Khan noted.

“Now, the government is fully focused on ensuring market stability and based on the committee's findings, immediate action will be taken to control prices and safeguard consumers.” The recent increase in sugar prices is due to a shortfall caused by climate change and weather not due to any artificial manipulation or malicious practices, he replied when he asked about. 

He emphasized that while the shortage stems from environmental factors, the government is fully committed to ensuring that consumers are not burdened with unjustified price hikes. The Prime Minister has issued clear instructions to the committee under the Ministry of Food Security to urgently review the situation and monitor the sector closely,” Khan said. 

“Within the next few days, based on the committee’s recommendations, strict measures will be implemented to bring sugar prices under control,” he mentioned. Khan reiterated the government’s resolve to maintain price stability and act decisively against any attempts to exploit the situation, ensuring relief for the public amid the ongoing supply challenges.

 “However, the situation is under active review, he said, adding, the committee formed under the Ministry of Food Security has been tasked for 30 days with closely examining the matter and its recommendations will guide timely and effective measures to stabilize prices.” Khan assured the public that the government remains fully committed to maintaining market balance and ensuring consumer protection through firm and fair intervention.
