Imran Khan faces nomination challenge in Lahore for 2024 electionsBreaking

December 27, 2023

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan's bid for a seat in the 2024 general elections from Lahore has hit a snag with an objection filed against his nomination papers. Mian Naseer, a Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) candidate and former provincial assembly member, submitted the objection, citing Khan's recent conviction as grounds for disqualification. Mian Naseer argues that Khan's conviction in the Toshakhana reference renders him ineligible to contest in accordance with Pakistan's election laws. This latest challenge follows an objection raised against the nomination papers of Pakistan People's Party (PPP) chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, also contesting from Lahore. The objection against Bilawal Bhutto Zardari hinges on a technicality in his nomination papers.

Citizen Muhammad Ayaz claims that Bilawal incorrectly identified himself as the chairman of both the PPP and its parliamentary wing, which are separate entities with distinct symbols. Both objections will now be reviewed by the returning officer, who will determine their validity and whether they warrant further scrutiny. This development injects an early dose of legal wrangling into the 2024 election campaign, potentially impacting the candidacies of key political figures in a crucial battleground city. It's important to note that both Khan and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari retain the right to defend their nominations and challenge the objections raised against them. The coming days and weeks will see legal teams from both parties engage in the initial rounds of this electoral tug-of-war, adding a layer of intrigue to the pre-election landscape.
