August 19, 2025

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has stated that the Indus Waters Treaty is directly linked to the protection of the lives of Pakistan’s 240 million citizens and cannot be unilaterally suspended.

Addressing the British Pakistan Lawyers Forum, Dar rejected India's claims of suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, emphasising that the treaty is vital for Pakistan’s water security and environmental stability.

According to the Foreign Office spokesperson, Dar clarified in his address that the Indus Waters Treaty was brokered in 1960 through the mediation of the World Bank and cannot be unilaterally suspended or put on hold.

He further added that the treaty regulates 80% of Pakistan’s water resources and is directly tied to the well-being of its 240 million citizens. He stressed that any unilateral action on such a critical issue as water would be considered a violation of international laws and agreements.
