Indian police have arrested senior Hurriyat leader Javed Ahmed Mir in Srinagar, deepening the ongoing crackdown on pro-freedom leadership in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir. According to Kashmir Media Service, police raided his residence in the Zaina Kadal area and took him into custody before shifting him to Shergari Police Station under the draconian Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). Police claimed that Javed Mir has been detained in connection with a 1996 case related to anti-India and pro-freedom activities.
The old FIR had named several top Hurriyat leaders, including the martyred Syed Ali Gilani, Abdul Ghani Lone, Shabbir Ahmed Shah, Nayeem Ahmed Khan, Shakeel Bakshi, Javed Mir and others. Rights groups say the revival of decades-old cases reflects India’s continued bid to harass and intimidate Kashmiri leadership by weaponising black laws to suppress their peaceful political struggle.
