After shutting down brick kilns to curb environmental pollution, the Islamabad administration has now turned its focus to smoke-emitting vehicles.Free vehicle emission testing is being provided at three locations in the city until August 31. After the deadline, heavy fines will be imposed on vehicles entering the city with visible smoke emissions.
The campaign aims to improve air quality and promote eco-friendly practices. Citizens have welcomed the move and urged the government to increase the number of testing stations to reduce wait times. Free testing services are available at Old Parade Ground, F-9 Park, and the Excise Office. The facility has been operational since July 15. In the first phase, vehicles manufactured in 2021 or later are exempt from inspection.
Both public and private vehicles are being tested with international-standard equipment. Vehicles that pass the inspection are issued a barcode sticker for their windscreen. So far, 2,778 vehicles have been tested over two weeks, with 2,665 declared compliant. Authorities have stated that from September 1, the free service will be withdrawn and smoke-emitting vehicles will be completely banned from entering the capital. Violators will face heavy fines.
