Lahore air turns toxic; city tops global pollution chartBreaking

A thick layer of toxic smog has blanketed Lahore, pushing it to the top of the list of the world’s most polluted cities.On Friday morning, the city’s air quality index (AQI) was recorded at a hazardous level of 344. Experts have warned that pollution is likely to increase further and have advised residents to wear masks to protect themselves from the toxic air. According to air quality data, pollution levels on Lower Mall reached an alarming 687, while Iqbal Town recorded an AQI of 585. 

The Meteorological Department stated that there is no likelihood of rain in Lahore in the coming days, and temperatures are expected to reach 31 degrees Celsius over the next 24 hours. Karachi ranked fifth among the most polluted cities, with an air quality index of 172, while Faisalabad, Multan, and Gujranwala also recorded air quality levels deemed hazardous to health. The Met Office and environmental experts warn that smog is expected to intensify further in the coming days. 

The worsening smog has already led to a rise in respiratory and other pollution-related illnesses across Punjab. Meanwhile, in the federal capital, Islamabad, the weather is expected to remain dry and warm. Temperatures are likely to reach up to 31 degrees Celsius today, with no forecast of rainfall over the next 24 hours.
