Pakistan records 13pc increase in domestic debtsBreaking

Pakistan recorded a surge of 2.4 percent in government borrowings on a monthly (MoM) and 13 percent on an annual (YoY) basis in June 2025, according to a report released by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP). According to media reports, the  SBP report revealed that government borrowings ballooned to Rs77,888 billion during the month of June 2025.

During the same period of the previous fiscal year 2024, the overall debt was Rs68,914 billion. The government borrowed Rs8974 billion during one year.The State Bank of Pakistan report stated that domestic borrowings of the government recorded an increase of 15.5 percent to reach Rs54,471 billion, while in June 2024, the debt was Rs47,160 billion. 

An increase of Rs 7311 billion was recorded by domestic borrowings during the year. The external debt of the government showed an increase of 7.6 percent to reach Rs23,417 billion. During the month of June 2024, the external debt of the government was Rs21,754 billion, and an increase of Rs1663 billion was registered during the year.
