Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Sindh has issued severe heat and heatwave alert during Eidul Azha holidays. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, moderate to severe heatwave conditions may occur in different areas from May 25 to 31. DG PDMA Salman Shah said temperatures are likely to reach 47 to 50 degrees Celsius in different districts of Sindh. There are chances of heat increase in Sukkur, Shikarpur, Qambar Shahdadkot, Jacobabad, Larkana, Dadu, Shaheed Benazirabad and Tharparkar, Salman Shah said.
DG PDMA said many areas including Badin, Sujawal, Thatta, Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas, Jamshoro and Sanghar may also be affected by heat. Salman Shah said due to extremely hot weather in Karachi, the temperature may go up to 35 to 38 degrees Celsius and the intensity of heat is likely to continue even at night. Public should arrange shade and water properly for sacrificial animals, Salman Shah alerted. He directed Deputy Commissioners and related agencies should ensure to implement heatwave SOPs.
On the instructions of Rehabilitation Advisor Gianchand Israni, the staff is alert and fully prepared to deal with any emergency, Salman Shah said. On the instructions of PDMA, the district administration and other institutions have set up heatwave relief camps and heatstroke wards in hospitals, Salman Shah added. He warned that citizens should avoid unnecessary exposure to the sun and drink plenty of water. Children, women and senior citizens should take special precautions during the heatwave, Salman Shah advised.
