Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Monday visited Jhang to monitor the relief and rescue activities being carried out in the district for the flood-affected people.She went to the field hospital close to a relief camp to inquire after the sick and also review the treatment facilities being provided there. The people, gathered on the occasion, were excited to find Maryam in their midst and chanted slogans in her support.
The chief minister also took a little girl into her lap, while an elderly woman prayed for her. Also on Monday, Punjab Information Minister Azma Bukhari said that experts had called the ongoing floods in the country ‘super floods’. Addressing a press conference in Lahore, she said that an extraordinary situation was created following the release of water by India into the rivers of Punjab.However, she claimed that due to the timely action taken by the Punjab government, there were fewer losses.
“Sahiwal, Jhang, Multan and other areas are on high alert,” she said, adding, “Around 2,200 to 2,500 villages have been affected by the floods.”Azma further said that besides human beings, animals, too, had been shifted to safer locations. “India has released more water into the River Sutlej; therefore the next 24 to 48 hours are important.” The minister stated categorically that the provincial government would not leave the flood victims alone.
