July 25, 2025

Punjab government has decided to continue subsidy of Orange Line Train. In this regard, Punjab Finance Department has released budget for Orange Line train of Rs7 billion as subsidy. The Punjab Government renewed its strong commitment to urban transport development by allocating a massive Rs7 billion subsidy package for Orange Line Train for the Fiscal Year 2025-26.

Importantly, this cash injection is to counter rising operational costs due to inflation and energy price spikes as a result of economic pressure.  With this continued support, the government wants to ensure affordable public transport for the people of Lahore, especially the lower and middle-income sections of society, who depend on this system for their daily commutes.

This orange line train subsidy also speaks about Punjab’s overall urban policy, which includes sustainable mass transit that cuts congestion, improves air quality, and promotes economic inclusion. In the very nature of the economic structure of a capital-intensive mass transit project, the necessity for subsidizing the orange train arises.

Constructed with heavy investment by Orange Line Metro Train costs, this new state of the art system was financed to a large extent through loans. On the other hand, the government also released Rs20 billion for Apni Chhat Apna Ghar. The Finance Department has made this budget online.
