July 03, 2025

As the second spell of the monsoon approaches, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a high-level alert across Punjab, warning of heavy rains and potential flooding from Saturday, July 5, through Thursday, July 10. The anticipation of the severe weather, PDMA has directed all provincial departments, including WASA, Rescue 1122, and local administrations, to remain on high alert.

Additional instructions have also been sent to the Health Department, Irrigation Department, Communication and Works, Local Government, and Livestock Department to prepare for emergency response. According to PDMA Punjab, the second phase of monsoon rainfall is expected to hit several parts of the province. Showers will drench Rawalpindi, Murree, Galiyat, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Wazirabad, Lahore, Sheikhupura, Sialkot, Narowal, Sahiwal, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, Nankana Sahib, Chiniot, and Faisalabad.

Meanwhile, intense rainfall with thunder and lightning is forecast in Okara, Kasur, Khushab, Sargodha, Bhakkar, and Mianwali. On Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, regions in South Punjab—Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, Dera Ghazi Khan, Multan, Muzaffargarh, Khanewal, Lodhran, Rajanpur, Rahim Yar Khan, and Layyah—may also experience thunderstorms and heavy showers. Director General of PDMA Punjab, Irfan Ali Kathia, stated that water levels in major rivers across the province are expected to rise significantly starting July 7.

There is a strong possibility of flooding in river-adjacent areas, hill torrents, and seasonal streams. He also warned that heavy rainfall may lead to urban flooding, particularly in cities of northern and central Punjab. In line with instructions from Chief Minister Punjab, Maryam Nawaz, all relevant departments have already been alerted in advance to take proactive measures. DG PDMA Irfan Ali Kathia also urged citizens to take safety precautions during inclement weather.

“During storms and strong winds, stay in safe places and avoid unnecessary travel,” he advised. He further stressed the importance of protecting children by keeping them away from low-lying waterlogged areas, electric poles, and power lines. Residents were also asked to seek shelter to protect themselves from lightning and to act responsibly during weather emergencies.
