The United Nations has said that the situation has moved to “a better place” after Pakistan and India reached an understanding to end hostilities and hoped the countries would use it to deal with their “outstanding issues”. The statement follows an agreement between the two South Asian neighbours on May 10 to halt military action after four days of intense cross-border drone and missile exchanges. The development has been widely seen as a positive step by the international community, including the UN.
Speaking at the daily press briefing in New York, Stéphane Dujarric, spokesperson for UN Secretary-General António Guterres, said, “The ceasefire is holding. I think we have seen we’re in a better place than we were before”. Dujarric expressed hope that the cessation of hostilities would create space for further engagement between the two countries. “We hope that the ceasefire will continue to hold, and we hope that the parties will use this to deal with a lot of the outstanding issues between them,” he added.
