Thar Coal Mine reaches 15 million-hour safety milestone
The Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company (SECMC) has achieved a significant safety goal at its Thar desert mining operation, recording 15 million work hours without a major injury. The Thar coal mining project is a key public-private partnership under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), involving the Sindh Government, major Pakistani firms like Engro Energy and HUBCO, and Chinese technical partners, Gwadar Pro reported.
Operating in Thar Coal Block II, the open-pit mine produces 7.6 million tons of local lignite coal annually. It directly fuels the large-scale HUBCO, Shanghai Electric, and ThalNova power plants, supporting Pakistan's goal of energy independence. In a statement, the company confirmed the new safety record..“This is a critical benchmark in high-risk industries like mining. It reflects a strong safety culture, strict compliance with international best practices, and efficient operations with minimal disruptions,” said energy analyst Engr. Muhammad Aziz told Gwadar Pro. He noted that a strong safety record can boost worker morale and is a key factor for investors evaluating large-scale energy projects under CPEC.
