Pakistan's fish production reached 642.18 thousand metric tonnes during July-March FY2026, highlighting the growing importance of fisheries in supporting food supplies, employment and economic activity in coastal and inland communities, according to the Pakistan Economic Survey 2025-26.

The survey shows that the fisheries sector continues to contribute to livelihoods and food security through marine and inland fish production across the country.

According to the report, the sector supports fishermen and workers engaged in fishing, aquaculture, transportation, processing and marketing activities.

Marine fisheries account for a major share of national fish production, benefiting from Pakistan's coastline along the Arabian Sea. Inland fisheries, including rivers, lakes, ponds and dams, also contribute significantly to overall output.

During July-March FY2026, marine fish production stood at 427.18 thousand metric tonnes, while inland fish production totaled 215.00 thousand metric tonnes.

The survey notes that rising demand for fish and seafood products has increased the importance of fisheries within the broader agriculture sector.

Population growth, urbanization and changing consumption patterns have contributed to higher demand for fish and seafood products in local markets.

The report highlights ongoing efforts to improve the fisheries sector and boost exports through stronger extension services, innovative fishing methods, value-added products, higher per capita fish consumption, improved socio-economic conditions for fishermen, and a review of the deep-sea fishing policy of 2018.

According to the survey, these initiatives aim to improve the sector’s productivity, sustainability, and export potential.

The fisheries sector also provides employment opportunities for communities living near rivers, reservoirs, lakes and coastal regions where fishing remains an important economic activity.

The survey notes that improving productivity and sustainability remains a key priority as authorities seek to enhance the sector's contribution to food security and rural development.

According to the report, the country's fisheries resources offer considerable potential for further expansion through improved management practices and investment in value-added activities.

The survey highlights that sustainable exploitation of marine and inland fisheries resources will be essential to maintaining long-term growth while protecting aquatic ecosystems.

With fish production reaching 642.18 thousand metric tonnes during July-March FY2026, the fisheries sector continued to support livelihoods, food supplies and economic activity across coastal and inland regions of Pakistan.
