Gilgit-Baltistan’s rapidly expanding IT sector showcases innovative growth, job creation, and strategic digital initiatives driving regional economic transformation and future prosperity.

Talking to WealthPK, Mushtaq Ahmed, Additional Chief Secretary of Planning and Development Department, highlighted that the region’s tech sector was experiencing a remarkable surge, with over $100 million in IT revenue generated in the past year – a milestone that signals a promising digital future for the area.

He attributed this success to the region’s strategic embrace of information technology as a catalyst for both regional and national development. Ahmed emphasised that Pakistan’s economic trajectory depends on digital transformation, reducing reliance on traditional sectors, and adopting technology-driven models.

He highlighted the ‘URAAN Pakistan’ initiative — launched under the prime minister's vision and led by the minister for planning — is a timely and strategic roadmap to guide the nation's transition. According to Ahmed, GB’s IT sector is not only generating significant revenue but also creating high-skilled jobs and new business opportunities, particularly in the rapidly growing freelance economy.

He added that government initiatives play a crucial role in this transformation. “IT education is being integrated from primary schools to universities, and educational institutions are being upgraded into smart campuses with modern digital infrastructure.”

“These campuses double as co-working spaces, empowering youth and entrepreneurs to participate in the digital economy,” he said. He expressed confidence that these efforts would help triple the region’s IT-related income in the coming years, aligning perfectly with the broader vision of ‘URAAN Pakistan’.

He also stressed the importance of provincial coordination, knowledge sharing, and technological collaboration to position Pakistan as a strong digital economy by 2029, with IT and exports as key growth pillars. “The government’s commitment to decentralising digital initiatives and prioritising ongoing IT projects is expected to further boost per capita income and foster gender equality through increased female participation in the tech workforce,” he noted.

Ahmed further added that the region’s tech boom reflects a broader national shift toward digitalisation and innovation. “With continued investment, strategic planning, and a focus on inclusive growth, the region is poised to become a major player in Pakistan’s digital future – setting an example for other provinces to follow,” the secretary underscored.
