Inflation in rural areas crossed the 10.5% mark in April 2026, reflecting sustained price pressures across essential commodities and services.

According to the “Monthly Review on Price Indices April 2026”, released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics and available with Wealth Pakistan, the Rural Consumer Price Index (RCPI) increased by 10.56% on a year-on-year basis, compared to 7.2% recorded in March.

The data shows that the overall rural CPI index increased to 297.63 in April from 291.55 in March, reflecting a broad-based rise in prices. The increase was observed across multiple expenditure groups within the rural consumption basket.

Food and non-alcoholic beverages, which hold the largest weight in the rural CPI, recorded a year-on-year increase of 7.80%. On a monthly basis, food prices rose by 0.93%, with perishable items contributing significantly to short-term price movements.

Perishable food items in rural areas increased by 14.30% on a month-on-month basis, while recording a 7.23% rise year-on-year. Non-perishable food items showed relatively moderate movement, declining by 0.64% on a monthly basis but increasing by 7.88% compared to April 2025.

Housing, water, electricity, gas and fuels recorded one of the highest increases, rising by 18.34% year-on-year and 4.35% month-on-month, highlighting the impact of utility-related costs on rural households.

Transport costs also showed a strong increase, rising by 26.29% year-on-year and 12.96% on a monthly basis, reflecting the impact of fuel-related expenses on rural mobility and goods movement.
