In Indian occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IOJK), more than 8,500 Indian army personnel equipped with advanced weapons and technology have been deployed to ensure the safe conduct of the annual Hindu Amarnath Yatra. According to Kashmir Media Service, more than 8,500 Indian army personnel are deployed under ‘Operation SHIVA’ in addition to thousands of troops from the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and other paramilitary units already deployed to guard the pilgrims.
Additionally, an engineer task force has been mobilized to carry out road leveling, widening, and quick debris clearance in case of landslides. The Amarnath Yatra began on July 3 and will continue until August 9.It is worth noting that while the BJP-led Indian government is sparing no resources to ensure the safe conduct of the Amarnath Yatra and provide all facilities to the Hindu pilgrims, it continues to deny basic rights, including religious freedoms, to Kashmiri Muslims.
Muslims in occupied Jammu and Kashmir are frequently barred from offering Friday and Eid prayers. Srinagar’s historic Jamia Masjid and Eidgah grounds have remained shut for Eid congregations since August 2019. Furthermore, Kashmiri Muslims are also prevented from holding Muharram processions.
