Despite clear directives from the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA), the illegal decanting of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and its filling into public transport vehicles continues unabated in Attock city and surrounding areas, posing a serious threat to public safety. Sources reveald that over fifteen unauthorized outlets are operating openly in localities such as Gunjanabad, Sattar Chowk, Gedar Chowk, Kamra Road, Dhok Fateh, and Mehria Town.
These stations, operating without licenses or safety protocols, are reportedly using electric motors to transfer gas from one cylinder to another a highly dangerous and illegal practice. The hazardous trend has already resulted in tragic consequences. In recent incidents in the areas of Pind Sahib Khan and Haji Shah, a van caught fire, and a youth sustained serious injuries. Despite such alarming developments, concerned departments remain inactive.
It has emerged that the position of the Civil Defense Officer in the district has remained vacant for a considerable period. The charge currently lies with the District Officer in Chakwal, who seldom visits Attock. This administrative vacuum has led to a serious lack of oversight. Similarly, questions are being raised about the performance of the Regional Transport Authority (RTA), under whose watch the illegal practice continues. Locals allege that no significant enforcement measures have been taken despite the high risks involved.
Civic circles and social welfare organizations have strongly condemned the apathy of the authorities and called upon senior government officials to take immediate and strict action. They demand a crackdown on illegal LPG decanting operations to safeguard the lives and property of citizens. The ongoing negligence, in the face of repeated incidents and public outcry, underscores a growing safety crisis that requires urgent attention from the provincial and federal administrations.
