The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has emerged as the single largest party in the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly general elections 2026, according to unofficial and unverified results received. However, with no single party securing a clear majority, the role of independent candidates has become crucial for government formation in the region. According to the preliminary data, the PPP managed to secure 10 seats.
Candidates backed by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) won four seats, while the Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM) bagged one seat. Meanwhile PML-N is claiming leading on 6 seats. Crucially, five seats were won by independent candidates, who are now expected to play a decisive role in the making of the next government.
Political analysts, top-ranking in the region, suggest that intense horse-trading and political manoeuvring will begin as mainstream parties scramble to woo the independent winners. The final picture regarding the party positions and the future setup will emerge only after the official announcement of results by the Election Commission.
Meanwhile, the district of Gilgit witnessed major upsets where heavyweights from both sides clinched victories in their respective Constituencies. In Gilgit-1, former GB chief minister and PML-N candidate Hafiz Hafeez-ur-Rehman secured a comfortable victory with a heavy majority. Concurrently, in Gilgit-2, PPP Gilgit-Baltistan President Amjad Hussain Advocate defeated his rival contestants to claim the seat, cementing his party's stronghold in the district.
