The Punjab government has officially launched the E-Taxi Scheme 2025, unveiling its instalment plan and balloting details.Designed to create job opportunities for unemployed youth, promote eco-friendly transport, and modernise the taxi industry, the scheme offers vehicles on a five-year, interest-free loan. Of these, 30 e-taxis will be reserved for women.

To facilitate the programme, the government is also establishing a charging infrastructure and has set up an online portal (E-taxi.Punjab.gov.pk) for applications.Punjab Minister for Transport Bilal Akbar Khan emphasised that the scheme is based on easy terms and conditions, with the Punjab government covering the entire interest cost.

He noted that the initiative will not only promote a green environment but also attract more citizens to adopt sustainable transport. In the first phase, a total of 1,100 electric taxis will be distributed across Punjab. Applications are open online until October 5, 2025.Officials explained that the programme is expected to reduce air pollution and fuel costs while providing citizens with a cost-effective, modern, and environmentally friendly transport option. 

It is also aimed at improving the urban transport system in major cities and generating new employment opportunities.Under the financing plan, the government will provide a subsidised down payment facility in addition to covering interest expenses.  For vehicles priced between Rs. 4 million and Rs. 10 million, the Punjab government will contribute Rs. 585,000 toward the buyer’s down payment, while partner banks will finance the remaining amount.

The provincial government has already approved a scheme enabling partner banks to provide loans of up to Rs. 665,000 for electric vehicles, further strengthening the programme.
