Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) has entered into an agreement with the Center for Intelligent Systems and Network Research (CISNR) to address grid inefficiencies, integrate solar energy, and enhance distribution reliability, reports WealthPK.

GIZ Pakistan backs the initiative named "Digitization and Decarburization of the Distribution Network". Energy expert Ammar Kharal told WealthPK that LESCO entered into an MoU with CISNR under the initiative focused on digitization and decarburization of the distribution network. “This collaboration aims to harness modern digital technologies to enhance the performance and sustainability of LESCO’s power distribution infrastructure,” he said.

As part of the MoU, a CISNR team will undertake a pilot project involving complete digitization of an 11kV feeder located in Saidpur, along with two transformers situated in DHA region, Kharal explained. “This pilot will serve as a proof of concept, showcasing the effectiveness and scalability of advanced digital solutions in real-world distribution environments.

By leveraging digital tools and smart monitoring systems, this initiative will address multiple operational challenges currently faced by utility providers like LESCO,’’ he added. Ammar highlighted that the key objectives of this project include the digitization of both the high-tension (HT) and low-tension (LT) networks, which will enable comprehensive visibility in the electrical infrastructure.

“With real-time data acquisition and analysis, LESCO will be better equipped to identify and reduce technical and non-technical losses. Additionally, the project will facilitate continuous monitoring of essential power quality parameters such as voltage, frequency, and harmonics, thereby improving overall service reliability and customer satisfaction.’’

He further highlighted another significant aspect of this initiative, which is its role in monitoring the impact of Solar Photovoltaic (PV) integration. As more solar energy systems are connected to the grid, maintaining grid stability becomes increasingly complex.  The enhanced visibility offered by this digitization effort will allow LESCO to better understand and manage the effects of solar penetration on the distribution network.

“Overall, this MoU represents a strategic step toward transforming LESCO’s distribution systems into a smarter, more efficient, and sustainable model. The partnership with CISNR, backed by GIZ Pakistan, underscores the commitment to modernizing the energy sector and supporting Pakistan’s broader goals of energy efficiency and carbon reduction,’’ he said.
